What is DHI?

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is a customized technique used to achieve natural and precise results in hair transplant. What is a CHOI Pen?

The Choi pen, also known as the Choi implanter or simply the “Choi” pen, is a specialized medical instrument used in hair transplant procedures, especially in the Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) technique. It was developed by Dr. Kyungpil Choi, a South Korean hair transplant surgeon and is designed to facilitate precise and controlled placement of individual hair follicles during the transplant process. 

The advantages of using the CHOI pen include simultaneous extraction and implantation, minimally invasive results, precise control of the density and direction of the transplanted hair, reduced risk of damage to the grafts due to the reduced amount of grafts handled. 

• Type and Extent of Hair Loss 

   DHI is a highly effective hair transplant technique for hairline creation, restricted areas of baldness or thickening areas of thinning hair. For this reason, it is ideal for candidates with well-defined areas of hair loss. It is effective in treating male and female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), but may not be suitable for other types of hair loss such as alopecia areata, scar alopecia or hair loss due to medical conditions.

  DHI is generally recommended for men with male pattern baldness in the early and middle stages, typically Norwood stages 2 to 5. • Immediate Postoperative Period (1st – 3rd days)

  Rest: After the DHI procedure, you will be asked to rest briefly in the clinic to ensure your stability before leaving. After you are discharged, you will be provided with a special aftercare package and the necessary medication, and your private driver will escort you to the hotel.

  Swelling and Discomfort: Some swelling, redness and discomfort in the donor and recipient areas is common during the first 24-48 hours.
  These symptoms are typically mild and minimized with medication provided by your doctor.

  Damage: As the newly transplanted grafts are very delicate, you should avoid rubbing or bumping the transplanted areas.

• 3rd-7th Days

  Gentle Wash: After the first 48 hours, your hair and scalp will be gently washed by our expert team at the clinic. Your consultant will provide the necessary instructions on washing your hair when you return home after the wash.

  Edema: Isotonic fluids injected during the hair transplant surgery can migrate down under the scalp towards your face. These edema and swelling that may occur on your face are temporary. You should drink as much water as possible and avoid salty foods.

• 2nd-4th Weeks

  Scabbing and Hair Loss: It is common for transplanted hair to be lost in the first few months. This is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. Scabbing in the recipient area is also part of the recovery. You should not scratch the scabs. Your medical consultant will provide you with instructions on how to wash your hair to remove the scab.

• Long Term Recovery (6-12 Months and Beyond)

  Be Patient: The final results of the DHI hair transplant can take a year or more to fully develop. DHI results are visible gradually. Starting from the 6th month, the first growths turn into denser areas within 1 year.

  Care: After your DHI hair transplant, it is important to maintain results by following your surgeon's guidance for hair care and taking any prescribed medications or supplements to support hair health and longevity.

Donor Area Scarring: DHI aims to minimize scarring in the donor area where hair follicles are harvested (typically the back and sides of the scalp).The small puncture marks or incisions used for follicle extraction are usually quite small and not noticeable to the eye.

Recipient Area Scarring: The small incisions made with the Choi pen or implanter tool are designed to heal quickly and leave small, barely visible scars. The aim is to create a natural-looking hairline without visible scarring. For this reason, the scars in the recipient area in the hair transplant operation are too small to be visible.
