Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty

Nose surgery, namely Rhinoplasty surgery, is a surgical procedure that can typically be applied by people who are not satisfied with the shape, size or appearance of the nose. Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, is an operation that can be preferred to reshape the appearance of the nose, as well as in cases of breathing problems or deviations due to trauma, and improves the quality of life.

About Rhinoplasty

Nose job, also known as rhinoplasty, is typically a surgical procedure for people who are unhappy with the shape, function, size or appearance of their nose. Nose jobs can be preferred to reshape the appearance of the nose, but they can also be planned to improve breathing problems or deviations due to trauma and to improve quality of life.
Rhinoplasty is usually performed using two basic techniques: open or closed rhinoplasty. Both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Rhinoplasty Techniques:

  1. Open Rhinoplasty
  • In an open rhinoplasty, an external incision is made along the columella, the strip of tissue between the nostrils. This incision allows the surgeon to lift the skin and access the nasal structures more directly. We have listed the advantages of this technique for you.
  • Open rhinoplasty offers surgeons direct access to the nasal structures, providing a better map of the underlying bone and cartilage tissues. More precise adjustments and corrections can be made in rhinoplasties performed with the open technique.
  • For more complex cases, open rhinoplasty can offer the opportunity to work more meticulously. Surgeons have better control over shaping the nose and addressing issues such as asymmetry, nasal bridges or breathing.
  • Because the surgeon's field of vision is clear in open technique rhinoplasty, it can minimize the risk of complications such as asymmetry, overcorrection or damage to nasal structures. This can lead to a smoother recovery and a lower chance of revision surgery.
  • Open rhinoplasty is often preferred for revision surgeries where previous procedures have resulted in unsatisfactory outcomes. The direct access provided by the open approach allows surgeons to address the underlying issues more effectively.
  • Open rhinoplasty can often be used to improve previous failed or unsatisfactory results. The direct access provided by the open approach allows surgeons to address the underlying issues more effectively.

2.) Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty, also known as endonasal rhinoplasty, is the reshaping of the nose with incisions made entirely through the nostrils, without any visible external scarring. In this approach, the surgeon makes adjustments to the shape, size and symmetry of the nose without removing the skin from the nasal frame as in open rhinoplasty. While the closed rhinoplasty technique has the advantage of leaving no visible surgical scars, it is also more limited in access than the open rhinoplasty technique. Let's take a look at the advantages of closed rhinoplasty:

  • One of the most appealing advantages of closed rhinoplasty is that all incisions are made inside the nostrils and there is no visible external scarring.
  • Closed rhinoplasty typically involves less tissue manipulation compared to open rhinoplasty. As a result, patients usually experience less swelling, bruising and discomfort.
  • Since tissue intervention is performed only through the nose in closed technique rhinoplasty, there is less postoperative pain and discomfort.
  • Closed rhinoplasty is often preferred for patients who need minor adjustments to the shape or size of the nose, as it allows for precise changes with minimal disruption to the surrounding tissues.

How The Procedure Works

In the doctor's consultation, you can make a close study of how your nose will look after surgery with a 3D simulation study. After discussing your expectations and realistic results with your doctor, the necessary blood tests will be performed on the day of surgery. Rhinoplasty surgeries are usually performed under general anesthesia for the comfort of the patient, regardless of the technique. Nose surgeries can take between 1 and 3 hours depending on the complexity of the case. Your surgeon makes incisions according to the chosen technique and reaches the structures inside the nose. Depending on the case, your surgeon may add or remove bone or cartilage. Depending on the desired result, the tip of the nose can be lifted, the size of the nose can be reduced and the nasal hump can be eliminated. Breathing problems caused by a blow to the nose, improperly planned previous nasal operations or concha-related breathing problems are improved by your surgeon. The operation ends with the closing the incisions. Self-dissolving stitches do not need to be removed externally.

Incisions and Scars in Rhinoplasty

The incisions made in rhinoplasty vary according to the technique used.

  1. Open Rhinoplasty

Incision Site: In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made along the columella, the strip of tissue separating the nostrils, to directly access the internal structure of the nose.

Scar: The scar is located in the tissue between the two nostrils and is quite small. It is inconspicuous because it is under the nose.
The scars fade over time and become almost invisible.

2. Closed (Endonasal) Rhinoplasty

Incision Site: In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are located completely inside the nostrils, no incisions are made on any tissue outside the nose.

Scars: Since the incisions are inside the nostrils, there are no visible scars.

1
What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgery that involves intervening on the cartilage and bone in the nose to improve the appearance of the nose or to improve breathing function. Rhinoplasty is a type of surgery that can be planned both for medical reasons and for cosmetic reasons.

2
Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

There are many factors that determine whether you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty. These include your general health, deviated septum, previous rhinoplasty, thinness or thickness of the skin and many other factors. You should consult an experienced plastic surgeon for a personalized rhinoplasty evaluation.

3
How much does a rhinoplasty cost?

Rhinoplasty costs can vary depending on the technique of the surgery, whether you have had previous rhinoplasty, additional procedures that may be required and the experience of your doctor. To get an exact cost, you can contact our team of expert consultants and get personal assessments from our plastic surgeons.

4
How is rhinoplasty performed?

The surgery varies depending on the technique, but usually the bone and cartilage tissue is accessed through incisions made through the nose. Techniques may include removing or adding tissue, reshaping the cartilage or adjusting the nostrils.

5
Is rhinoplasty painful?

Patients can usually feel minimal discomfort for the first few days after surgery, but pain can usually be managed with prescribed medication. Swelling and bruising are common during the initial recovery period.

6
What is the recovery process like after nose surgery?

Recovery times can vary, but patients can usually resume light activities one week after the operation.
Swelling and edema in the nose after surgery is quite normal. In the first month, swelling is decreased by 10%, and 50% is expected to be gone by the end of the 3rd month. It is necessary to wait at least 1 year for final results.

7
Will there be visible scarring after rhinoplasty?

Incisions are usually made inconspicuously inside the nose or along its natural contours, minimizing visible scarring. The location of the scars varies slightly depending on the rhinoplasty technique.

8
Can I combine rhinoplasty with other procedures?

In some cases, rhinoplasty can be combined with other procedures such as chin augmentation or eyelid surgery. However, the process of combining rhinoplasty with other surgeries may vary depending on the individual's condition.

9
Can rhinoplasty improve breathing?

Rhinoplasty can be combined with nasal surgery known as septoplasty, which targets structural problems that affect breathing, such as a deviated septum. Rhinoplasty and septoplasty can be performed in the same surgery and this type of surgery is called septorhinoplasty.

10
Is there an age limit for rhinoplasty?

Plastic surgeons may recommend waiting until facial growth is complete, typically by the late teens or early twenties.

11
What is open rhinoplasty?

Open rhinoplasty is a surgical technique that involves making a small incision on the columella, the strip of skin between the nostrils, in addition to internal incisions. This allows better visibility and access to the nasal structures during the procedure. This technique is generally preferred in cases of revision rhinoplasty surgery or deviated septum due to severe blows.

12
How is open rhinoplasty different from closed rhinoplasty?

In closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nose, allowing limited visibility. Open rhinoplasty involves an incision on the columella in addition to the internal incisions in the nose for complex cases or detailed adjustments, allowing a more direct view of the nasal structures.

13
Is the scar more prominent with open rhinoplasty?

While open rhinoplasty involves an external incision, the scar on the columella is typically well hidden and tends to fade over time. Complete healing of the incision scars is directly related to adherence to postoperative care.

14
Is the recovery process for open rhinoplasty different from closed rhinoplasty?

The overall recovery process is similar, but patients may initially experience slightly more swelling and numbness due to the external incision.  Follow the surgeon's postoperative instructions to speed up the recovery process.

15
Will I have a tampon in my nose after open rhinoplasty?

After all rhinoplasty surgeries, tampons can be placed in the nose, but this usually depends on the surgeon's approach.
If it is necessary to put a tampon in the nose after surgery, these tampons are usually removed during the first check-up one week after surgery.

16
What is closed rhinoplasty?

Closed rhinoplasty is a surgical technique in which all incisions are made inside the nose without external incisions.
This approach is more suitable for patients who do not usually have breathing problems or who will undergo rhinoplasty for the first time.

17
Am I a good candidate for closed rhinoplasty?

Closed rhinoplasty may be suitable for individuals with less complex nasal problems, such as small nasal bridges or tiny nasal tip adjustments. The choice between closed and open rhinoplasty depends on the patient's condition and the surgeon's advice.

18
Does closed rhinoplasty leave visible scars?

As all incisions are made internally, closed rhinoplasty usually does not cause visible external scarring. The incision scars are positioned inside the nose.

19
Can closed rhinoplasty be used for major nasal revisions?

Closed rhinoplasty may result in lower success rates for complex cases that require significant changes or extensive access to the nasal structures. Open rhinoplasty may be recommended for major revisions.

20
What kind of sutures are used in rhinoplasty?

After rhinoplasty, dissolvable sutures are usually used and these are completely removed within a few months. They do not need to be removed by the surgeon.

21
Can I feel the internal stitches after rhinoplasty?

No, the internal stitches are typically placed under the skin and patients do not usually feel them. Any discomfort or tightness experienced after rhinoplasty is more related to swelling or dryness inside the nose. Your medical consultant will guide you to make the recovery period more comfortable.

22
How can I care for the sutures after rhinoplasty?

It is very important to follow the postoperative care instructions. Keep incision sites clean, avoid nasal trauma and stick to the care guide provided by your medical consultant.

23
How long will it take to see the final results after rhinoplasty?

Postoperative recovery processes are unique and depend on many factors. While it may take a few weeks for the edema to subside after rhinoplasty, the final recovery does not happen before 1 year.

24
Can I combine rhinoplasty with other procedures?

Yes, depending on the case, rhinoplasty can be combined with many other operations such as eyelid, chin augmentation, etc.

25
Can rhinoplasty solve my breathing problems?

Yes, rhinoplasty not only changes the shape of the nose, but your surgeon will also improve the breathing problems.

26
Will I need to wear a cast or splint after rhinoplasty?

Yes, after rhinoplasty, your doctor will apply a splint both to stabilize the shape of the nose and to protect it against bumps.

27
Can I have a revision rhinoplasty if I am not satisfied with the results?

Yes, revision rhinoplasty can be performed if you are not satisfied with the initial results. Revision rhinoplasty surgery is quite complex and may not give the satisfaction of primary rhinoplasty. For this reason, it is very important to plan your first rhinoplasty with a surgeon whose skills and experience you trust.

28
How long after rhinoplasty can I wear glasses?

It is not recommended to wear glasses after rhinoplasty to avoid pressure on the bridge of the nose. It is okay to wear your daily optical glasses after the third month and sunglasses after the sixth month. Your medical consultant will provide you with detailed postoperative instructions.

29
Can I travel after rhinoplasty?

You can travel after the postoperative period (7-10 days) but you will need to protect your nose carefully.

30
Will my sense of smell be affected after surgery?

Postoperative swelling and nasal congestion may reduce your sense of smell, but it will be restored after recovery. It is not permanent.

31
How soon can I wear makeup after rhinoplasty?

To avoid irritation or infection, you should avoid wearing makeup on the nose for a few weeks. You should not neglect sunscreen.

32
How long should I keep my head elevated to sleep after rhinoplasty?

Sleeping with your head elevated for the first week helps reduce swelling. The severity of swelling after surgery varies according to the individual. During this period, your medical consultant will provide you with the appropriate instructions and make this process as comfortable as possible.
