Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty

Some individuals may have oil glands around the eyes. At the same time, as we age, our skin loses its elasticity and vitality. We first begin to observe this tired appearance from around the eyes. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure that involves eliminating sagging skin, excess fat, or muscle above or below the eye.

About Blepharoplasty

They are not always performed for cosmetic purposes. After a while, the sagging skin over the eye narrows the field of vision and reduces the quality of life and therefore blepharoplasty is needed. With blepharoplasty, you can provide a more alert appearance and reverse the trend of a face that always looks tired.

How the Procedure Works

Although lower eyelid surgery is recommended to be performed under general anesthesia, upper eyelid surgery is a type of operation that can be performed under both local and general anesthesia.
In the first examination, the surgeon will determine the facial muscle structure, excess skin and fat and prepare an operation plan accordingly.

On the day of the operation, the surgeon will make drawings on the upper and lower eyelid to determine where the incisions will be made. If the patient needs additional interventions (such as loose muscle problems), they will correct them during the operation. Self-dissolving sutures and adhesives are usually used in the eyelid operations. Thus, there is no need for stitches afterward and the scars are practically invisible after recovery.

Incisions and Surgery Scars

In eyelid surgery, your surgeon will draw the incisions along the folds and creases of the upper eyelid and finish with a thin suture when possible. In this way, these scars will fade and will be hidden at the fold points after the recovery period is over.

In the lower eyelid, if it is an operation in which the skin and fat are removed together, your surgeon will usually complete the suture scar at the base of the eyelashes and you will have a completely invisible surgical scar. If you do not have a problem with excess skin but only excess fat, then your surgeon will make the incision inside the eyelid and the surgical scar will not be visible. This approach is also called the transconjunctival approach.

The upper or lower eyelid offers the opportunity to camouflage the scars very well due to their structure and as long as the surgical procedure is performed by experienced doctors, your surgical scar will not be noticed.

Non-Surgical Options:

  • Plexr: Plexr is an invasive and non-surgical procedure.
It is used to remove excess skin on the skin surface without damaging the surrounding tissues by creating small electric currents at the point of contact with the skin. Plexr laser is versatile and can be preferred in areas such as wrinkles, sagging skin, acne scars, and pigmentation problems. In eyelid treatment, it is also known as "non-surgical blepharoplasty".

  • As collagen production increases after Plexr application, the results are long-lasting. Unlike traditional surgical procedures, there are no incisions or stitches, so it offers patients a shorter recovery time. When applied in the eyelid area, more than one session may be required. You may determine how many sessions you will need during the initial evaluation with your surgeon.

  • Dermal Filler Application: In some cases, tissue loss in the lower eyelid is not suitable for the Plexr or blepharoplasty.
In such cases, dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid are recommended to give a more lively appearance to the eye that has lost its volume. These fillers are injected into the tear trough area under local anesthesia and their permanence varies depending on the brand and type used. Hyaluronic acid does not promise a permanent procedure due to its own structure.
For this reason, it is recommended to have it done at regular intervals.

  • Botox: (Botulinum toxin): Botox is very popular for the treatment of lateral canthal lines around the eyes, also known as crow's feet. The substance botulinum toxin, which is also named the procedure, prevents the appearance of fine wrinkles by relaxing the targeted muscles.

  • Botox is an outpatient treatment method performed by applying topical anesthetic cream to the application area.
Due to the nature of the substance itself, it is not permanent, long-lasting results are obtained if regular application is performed. Botox is generally effective on newly formed and shallow wrinkles and lines that appear when you make facial expressions. If you have deep wrinkles, Botox will not be enough for them. Doctor consultation is very important in this sense because, after the initial evaluation, your doctor may direct you to other methods that will satisfy you in the long term, such as dermal fillers.
